2R News

Dear Families,
We are studying influential African Americans in United States history for Black History Month. Each child will be doing research on an important person and create a banner for our classroom bulletin board. The children will be using websites such as ducksters.com and factmonster.com to research their important person. We also have lots of great biographies in the classroom that will be used for research as well!
We are continuing Module 4 in math. The children are working hard on remembering and using all the math strategies they learned so far. We continue to practice basic math facts. We will practice skip counting in class, but it is not part of this module. Homework will align with what we are doing in the engageny module with some basic math facts and word problems worksheets for extra practice. We also started using zearn.com for math. The children have usernames and login information. This information was sent home. Please let me know if it's been misplaced, and I will print a new card with login info.
We are reading books by the nonfiction author, Gail Gibbons. Children will be doing "all about" writing during Writing Workshop. They are brainstorming different ideas and will choose a topic. The topic may be something they know a lot about or something they would like to research. Our class has many interests, and I can't wait to see what they decide to write about!
We will be going to the YMCA on Mondays, 2/25, 3/4, and 3/11. The PE teachers will send a note home regarding swimming in the near future. Children should bring a towel and a bag. There are lockers for their jackets, shoes, and bags. Please make sure everything is labeled. Girls can wear their bathing suits under their school clothes to the Y. Please remember to send in any clothes they may need to change into once they are finished swimming. There will be no snacks served at the Y. We will have snack once we return to school.
Thank you to all the parents who have visited 2R to read books. The class enjoys listening to stories and looks forward to finding out who is the Mystery Reader each week. Mystery readers can read 1-2 books to the class and bring a peanut/tree nut free snack. Mystery reader times last for 30 minutes.
Children should be reading for 15 minutes or more each night. I am sending home different reading logs for the children to fill out. These logs have a small amount of writing each night. I really want the children to connect with their reading and practice some of the things we've discussed in class.
Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to read and/or do a project with the class. We love to have parents visit!
Thank you to all the families that order from Scholastic Books. With your orders, we are able to get enough bonus points to use for our class library. If you'd like to place an order, our class code is H8882 on Scholastic Reading Club's website.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at jregan@sagharborschools.org
