Reading Quote

Idiom of the Summer

"Make hay when the sun shines"

What is sounds like:  make a pile of hay in the sunshine
What it really means: Make the most of an opportunity while it lasts
Origin:  Came from English farmers in medieval times who used hay as food for animals.  Centuries ago without modern machinery, it would take the farmer several days to cut, dry and collect the hay.  Since hay gets destroyed if it becomes wet, farmers used to take the opportunity when the weather was hot and sunny to cut and gather the hay.  So it became sensible piece of advice used by farmers. Example: Over the summer vacation, remember to make hay when the sun shines and take advantage of all that summer has to offer.
